I had my local Subaru dealer install the 10 inch Kicker subwoofer 2 days ago (finally became available in early July). I read some feedback on another site that someone in Texas had gone with it and felt it made the factory system much better.
Well, it is an improvement, but now the bass seems to overwhelm the other frequencies, especially on newer songs that have a lot of bassin the source. I like the music to sound crisp with good highs and some bass, but I am not interested in being heard 2 blocks away! i typically listen to my IPod in the car through the USB port. I listen to a wide range of music and a lot of the older 80s and 90s songs sound pretty good, but newer hip hop/EDM music does not. I have turned the lower frequencies on the EQ (100 and 160 Hz) down all the way and that helps somewhat. Also discovered that the subwoofer is in the front of the car, using the fader controls, so turning the fader back to R2 or R3 setting on the fader helps decrease the bass. I may have to go with 2-3 different EQ settings and switch from song to song, to enhance the bass for older songs and cut it down for newer stuff. Of course, that gets to be somewhat tedious.
Not sure what else I can do using the EQ and other settings on the stock head unit. I don't plan on upgrading the stereo further and the addition of the subwoofer does definitely decrease the door rattle from the front door speakers. Any ideas for tuning things up further would be certainly appreciated.
By the way, the installed cost of the Kicker sub was 773 (599 for the sub, 115 labor and about 50 tax).
Go and chk the woofer. Some brands have a switch for how sencitive you want it to be...
This is the factory accessory subwoofer-to my knowledge there is no way to adjust the subwoofer "gain" on the subwoofer itself, and the dealership said I would have to adjust it using the head unit.
Take it back tell them its garbage and youll figure something else out. I got everything for less than 550 and the install is the easiest i've ever done. I got:

Everything is in the trunk all you have to do is get vampire connectors and tap into the stock amp and the diagram is all online. Unfortunately, the enclosure is still being shipped so I haven't had the chance to tune everything yet. However the amp makes it easy to reduce the gain so it isn't as rediculous as with some newer music. Also, I went pretty big on power because I'm an audio guy and I absolutely DO want to be heard from two blocks away. Cheaper, less powerful stuff is out there.
