some new details on the Subaru BRZ and some insight on what the Subaru BRZ price might be like
The new Subaru BRZ coupé will have the lowest centre of gravity of any production car when it goes on sale next summer, according to the manufacturer.
The BRZ’s rear-wheel-drive configuration has meant that Subaru's compact 2.0-litre Boxer engine can be mounted even lower in the chassis than would normally be permissible in the manufacturer's conventional four-wheel-drive layout.
Despite being co-developed with Toyota, the vast majority of the engineering work has been undertaken by Subaru; although the company has confirmed that the BRZ's flat-four unit will incorporate a Toyota direct fuel-injection system.
Power outputs, however, will differ with a Subaru-spec ECU liberating the BRZ’s power to “less than 300bhp,” compared with the FT-86’s 200bhp figure.
Details of the car’s final spec remain under wraps - even Subaru's UK new MD admitted to Autocar that he'd only seen a clay model of the finished product - but insiders suggest that the grille and bumpers will differentiate the RBZ from its Toyota-badged sibling.
A roadster version could yet play a part in future model plans, but a topless car is ‘under consideration’ rather than developmental reality.
Subaru insists that no costing strategy has been established, but with the Volkswagen Scirocco confirmed as the main rival, expect the RBZ’s price tag to land somewhere in the current coupé ballpark.
The lack of a final figure - or even an image of the production car - has apparently not dissuaded Subaru fans from already registering their interest with the company's dealership network.
While the new 2+2 coupé is expected to fill a healthy new niche for the manufacturer, Subaru UK has made it clear that it intends to focus much of its energy on 'lifestyle' products, such as the new XV crossover, as it looks to achieve a sales target of 7500 units in 2012.
The Subaru BRZ will be unveiled at the Tokyo show next month.
Under 300hp, but higher than the FT86's 200hp, hmm.... I wonder what they will be doing to the 2.0 Liter boxer engine to improve the power output. I know it won't be a turbo and can't be anything too serious or else it would bring the Subaru BRZ price up significantly.
What could Subaru possibly be doing to bring the BRZ horsepower to under or around 300hp?
Why would you say it would bring the price up significantly? It really wouldn't. Less materials going into production, no AWD system(which drives costs up dramatically), and a readily available abundance of turbos and piping(JDM cars already using them in 2.0l spec). Also, Toyota has absorbed a significant portion of the development costs in this car. It seems it would have a lower production cost than a WRX, which I pre-ordered my '11 WRX, and paid less than the anticipated $25k this car will cost, for it. It seems reasonable that for the $25k price tag, it can and should be turbo charged. Look at the exhaust on the camo'ed test mule running around. Duals. Subaru has only used a dual exhaust setup on it's turbocharged vehicles.
Dual exhaust outlets are merely for cosmetic purposes. NA Foresters, Legacies, and Tribecas have dual exhaust outlets so it's not true that Subaru only uses them on turbo charged vehicles. BTW very few cars use true dual exhaust setups, Subarus have a single exhaust that split into dual outlets.
Tribecas are the 3.6l motor only. All of the 3.6's get duals. Aside from it not being a car, along with the Forester. If I need to be more clear. All 4 cyl Subaru cars that are NA, have a single outlet exhaust system.
Really? I didn't know that it's not a true dual exhaust system, being that I own an '11 WRX and all.
Rolleyes, really? Dude get off your high horse. I didn't realize that the new Leagacy had a single exhaust outlet. All Lagacies from 05'-09' had dual outlets no matter whether they were NA or turbo'd.
Your original post suggest that the BRZ will be turbo charged merely because of the fact that the test mule had dual exhaust outlets. I was trying to point out how false that connection you made was. A turbo model may be released later on, but the intial BRZ WILL be NA and still have dual oulets.
Ok, I see now. You weren't wrong at all, you just weren't clear enough. So to be perfectly clear all Subaru CARS(not vehicles) that have dual outlets are turbo charged(as long as it's not the 3.6 6 cyl).
